Sometimes You Choose Your Niche. Sometimes Your Niche Chooses You.

Larry Keltto • April 10, 2012

I’ve never claimed to be a fast learner. Here’s the latest example: it took me 18 years to identify my best niche.

For quite some time, I’ve been mystified by my clients. In our initial conversation, they invariably say they want to build a business that goes beyond a profit motive. Some clients have an education-related purpose. Some have a spiritual purpose. Some have a health purpose.

I found this very strange, because I’ve never consciously tried to attract people for whom money isn’t the ultimate concern.

What We Really Want

But this morning — on your average Tuesday — it occurred to me that my clients have one major thing in common: they want to build purpose-driven businesses. They want to be solopreneurs who want to change the world. Money isn’t their sole motivation. (Interestingly, it’s never motivated me very much, either. I’ve always been inspired the most by people who “aren’t in it for the money.” For example, I admire and envy teachers and athletic coaches who put their kids’ needs first.)

My best niche is purpose-driven solopreneurs who are on a quest to change the world. My niche was as obvious as the glasses on my face; I looked through those lenses for years but couldn’t see the lenses.

Finding Your Niche Is a Powerful Thing

The energy and excitement that people possess after they find or create their niche is awesome. And now, I’m feeling it for myself.

What about you? Have you found your best niche? How did it happen? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
