Dale J. Stephens Is Changing the World of Higher Education

April 18th, 2012 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Uncategorized

Dale J. Stephens, through his Web site Uncollege.org, is challenging the way we think about college. He has launched a movement whose time has come; it is gaining momentum and I think it will change how higher education is accessed and delivered.

Stephens empowers students to hack their education through resources, writing, and workshops. He believes that everyone can live an UnCollege life by hacking their education.

He says:

It’s false to say there are only three doors in life:

1. go to college and get an office job

2. become the next Mark Zuckerberg

Results of Solopreneur Community-Building Survey

April 17th, 2012 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Surveys

Last month I published a survey titled, “What would you want in a solopreneur group?”

The purpose of the survey was:

• To measure the amount of interest in a group

• To determine what form the community should take

• And ultimately, to decide whether it is worthwhile to commit the resources to form a group.

Below are the survey results. Twenty-two people responded (I was expecting/hoping for about 75).

I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether I should go forward with this — and how to do it.

What Is a Purpose-Driven Solopreneur?

April 13th, 2012 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Uncategorized

TheSolopreneurLife.com provides resources for purpose-driven solopreneurs who want to change the world.

This begs the question: what does “purpose-driven” mean?

Below is a list of truisms regarding purpose-driven solopreneurs. (Keep in mind that not everything on this list is true of every solopreneur). Purpose-driven solopreneurs:

• Don’t find niches, they create them.

• Want their businesses to change the world for the better.

• Do not view “net worth” solely in monetary terms.

• Help others lead lives of purpose.

• Are always building relationships.

• Don’t compete; they strive to be the best “me” possible (thank you Jim Sheard).

Let’s Make a Playlist For Solopreneurs

April 12th, 2012 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Uncategorized

If you were going to create a solopreneurship-themed playlist for yourself or a friend, what songs would you include?

Below are a few from me. Please share your ideas below, and let’s see what we can come up with!

“Dancing With Myself,” Billy Idol
Kind of an obvious choice for someone of my era. (Don’t tell, but I went to a few college costume parties dressed as Billy Idol. I hope the photos don’t surface.)

WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org: Which Should Solopreneurs Use?

April 11th, 2012 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Starting Out, Web Site, WordPress

Back when I was creating TheSolopreneurLife.com, I was new to WordPress and didn’t understand the distinction between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. It was very confusing.

I came to learn that WordPress.com is like renting a building for your business, while WordPress.org is like owning the building.

WordPress.com is a hosting platform that utilizes the same WordPress software that you can download from WordPress.org. With WordPress.com, the hosting and managing of the software is taken care of for you.

WordPress.org is open-source blog software that now is used for all kinds of Web sites. WordPress.org offers free downloads of WordPress files and includes step-by-step instructions for installing and configuring WordPress on your own hosting provider.
