Is Twitter Losing Its Power As a Tool For Solo Businesses?

December 12th, 2011 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Marketing, Social Media

Last week I visited with a colleague who has used Twitter smartly and effectively for her small business for a couple years. Prior to our conversation, I decided to ask if she’s sensing a decline in the return on her investment with Twitter.

I never had the opportunity. She beat me to it, saying that Twitter doesn’t generate nearly the quality or quantity of interaction for her that it did a year ago.

9 People Who Are On My Twitter ‘Social Media’ List

September 8th, 2011 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Marketing, Social Media

I operate a company called Golf Social Media Services. To help me stay on top of what’s happening in the social-media world, there are hundreds of great people I could follow on Twitter. But I don’t have time to follow hundreds. So, here are nine of the individuals who are on my “social media” list at Twitter and whose tweets apply to any industry.

Social Media Examiner, @smexaminer — This is the Twitter presence for SocialMediaExaminer.com, arguably the single-best source for social-media info for solopreneurs and small businesses.

A Mini-Review: Cinch Is A Cinch

February 23rd, 2011 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Social Media

I want to give you a heads-up about an audio tool that has the potential to extend your online reach. Cinch, created by BlogTalkRadio, is the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch app for the Cinchcast.com Web service. Cinchcast is a social network built around audio clips.

Cinch, combined with Cinchcast.com, gives users the ability to record, upload, and share audio at Cinchcast.com and throughout the Web.

At its most basic, Cinch is a free iPhone audio app. I installed Cinch a few weeks ago but something distracted me and I wasn’t able to try it until Tuesday. To test Cinch, I recorded a short clip from my BlogTalkRadio show and then tried to distribute the recording on Twitter and Facebook.

The Facebook Changes: How Will They Affect Solopreneurs?

February 14th, 2011 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Social Media

How was your weekend? I spent most of mine beefing up The Solopreneur Life’s Facebook “fan” page. It’s not what I was planning to do with my weekend.

But when I heard late last week about the latest Facebook changes, I knew it was a game-changer for me, and I suspect it will have big implications for a huge number of solopreneurs. Facebook, all of a sudden, is in play for solopreneurs’ social-media efforts.

The reason? For me it’s pretty simple.

Tools That Work for The Solopreneur Life: Share and Follow

December 10th, 2010 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Social Media, Software

I turned to Share and Follow after it was pointed out to me that the “share” WordPress plugin I was using didn’t automatically shorten URLs when readers wanted to share my posts on Twitter. That’s not good.

My Web-site builder recommended Share and Follow, which is a free (donations accepted), feature-rich, easy-to-use WordPress plugin. Created by phat-reaction in Amsterdam, Share and Follow uses bit.ly for the shortening of URLs, allows for great control over the “share” presentation, including choice of icon, icon + text, or text only. I also appreciate “Twitter suffix,” which enables the auto adding of “via @twittername”.

How to Prospect, Using Social Media

October 25th, 2010 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Marketing, Social Media

This column was written by Eric Ralph, who has dedicated himself to helping freelancers succeed. He is a former freelancer and now he is president of Milton, which offers the ability to manage contacts, projects, and finances together in one application. Follow him on Twitter @YourMilton.

Social media is growing by leaps and bounds, but it can be difficult to get a handle on it, and how it can really impact your business. Certainly there are a number of reasons to be active in social media, but building new business is often more important to freelancers than other social media benefits, like branding and customer service.
