How to Paint a Picture of Your Perfect Client

The Right-Brain Business Plan by Jennifer Lee is a book that I often recommend to my coachsulting clients.

One of my favorite sections in the book deals with developing a description of the perfect client (or customer) for your solo business.

Lee writes, “When a portrait artist paints a subject, he takes time observing her. He takes in the subtle details of her face, notices the color and texture of her clothes, and attempts to capture the energy and essence she exudes. Look at defining your perfect customers with that same level of fascination and engagement. The more you know about your perfect customers, the easier it will be to connect with them.”

Is Twitter Losing Its Power As a Tool For Solo Businesses?

Last week I visited with a colleague who has used Twitter smartly and effectively for her small business for a couple years. Prior to our conversation, I decided to ask if she’s sensing a decline in the return on her investment with Twitter.

I never had the opportunity. She beat me to it, saying that Twitter doesn’t generate nearly the quality or quantity of interaction for her that it did a year ago.

“It’s Only Norm”

A lifelong friend of mine has a surveying business. He’s always booked solid, no matter how bad the economy is.

He doesn’t have a Web site, he doesn’t do Twitter, he doesn’t use Facebook, he doesn’t have a LinkedIn profile, he doesn’t have a logo, he doesn’t purchase advertising of any kind.

And whenever someone calls him, he answers: “It’s only Norm.”

Think about that.

He could call his business Norman Civil Engineering Services. But he doesn’t. He could have a fancy office downtown. But he doesn’t. He could have a country club membership. But he doesn’t. He also doesn’t have any debt, and he owns multiple rental properties.
