Stopping by the gym on the way home from work is a bit of a fantasy for most solopreneurs.

We work from home, so there is no “stopping by.” Plus, who has two hours to drive there, work out, shower, and drive home?

The solution? A home gym.

I know, you don’t want a bunch of equipment lying around. And, heck, that treadmill you bought five years ago in the midst of a fitness seizure has become nothing more than a clothes rack.

Solopreneurs: Do You Stand While You Work?

December 3rd, 2010 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Health, Office

I woke up Tuesday morning with soreness in my lower back, and it got worse throughout the day.

I visited my chiropractor Wednesday, and he said that the amount of sitting that I do is affecting my back.

So I’m wondering: Do you stand while you work? What are the positives and negatives? How is your work space arranged? Please leave your comments below (and photos, if you have any, of your workspace).

FWIW, famous people who supposedly preferred standing up while working include: Leonardo Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon Bonaparte, and William Gladstone.

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The clocks just turned back and Thanksgiving is two weeks away. That means that the official start of the holiday overeating season is almost here.

There are some interesting statistics around holiday weight gain—the average weight gain is only a pound, but that pound tends not to ever come back off. Even more fascinating, individuals who are already overweight tend to put on 5 to 7 pounds.

Are You Sabotaging Your Creative Energy?

I’ve never been much of a 9-to-5’er. My perfect workday would be 10-3 with a two-hour lunch. You think I’m joking–I’m not.

But, as a solopreneur, a three-hour workday is a total joke. Even Tim Ferris knows that isn’t possible.

Our workdays are more like 13 hours, not three. During those 13 hours, our days are typically some mix of client meetings, working on the business (marketing, accounting, sales, and admin), and working in the business (proposals and other deliverables). Many time-management and productivity gurus would say, “Get the important stuff out of the way first to make sure it gets done.” While conceptually I like the idea, I disagree.

This 1-Minute Drill Keeps You Cool Under Pressure

How often do you have a project due or client presentation coming up, and the closer you get to the deadline, the more stupid you become? You might start feeling lethargic, have trouble concentrating, and possibly even get an upset stomach. Perhaps you get a headache or become cranky.

Believe it or not, those symptoms might be caused by improper breathing. Yep. Breathing. Remember how your Mom always told you to take a deep breath when you got upset? Turns out, she was on to something.

Solopreneur Health: Make the Most of Your Sleep

Last month I talked about taking time for yourself, but oftentimes it’s easier said than done. I get that. But sleep, now THAT is something we do every night, and it’s yet another opportunity to recharge.

The saying, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” while popular, isn’t terribly practical. Not only are you likely to be dead considerably faster, you will also most likely be fatter and more stupid than those of us who take the time to get our sleep.
