7 Small-Business Lessons You Can Learn From “Wicked”

September 11th, 2010 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Encouragement

Last Saturday my wife, daughters, and I saw the musical “Wicked” at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis. It’s the second time we have seen the show, and I’m sure it ranks in my Top 3 favorite musicals.

Part of my affection for “Wicked” comes from knowledge of the show. On family vacations, we’ve listened to the “Wicked” soundtrack many, many times as we’ve crossed the Western Plains (and yes, Kansas, even). But more important than familiarity—the lyrics! I love lyrics, and lyrics don’t get any better and wiser than “Wicked.”

But enough chit-chat! I give you seven business lessons from “Wicked”! (lyrics by the incomparable Stephen Schwartz)

Definition. {superpower: noun abilities beyond those of normal human beings}

Ancient Parable Reveals a Secret for Solo-Business Success

April 21st, 2010 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Encouragement

Below is a parable that appears in an excellent book titled “The Chemistry of Joy,” by Henry Emmons, M.D. This tale, found in the writings of philosopher Idries Shah, is a favorite of mine and I am ever mindful of its unexpected final sentence. The power of the story’s lesson continues to help me build my business, and I hope it will help you, too.

Henry Emmons writes: “Like many ancient teaching stories, this one involved a wise fool, sort of a sacred clown, who manages to fumble his way into wisdom—Mullah Nasrudin, the foil for many Islamic tales.”

“Set a Short Timeline and Watch What Happens”

April 9th, 2010 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Encouragement

I was craving inspiration this morning and found it, big-time, in a post from technology consultant Willie Jackson:

Even though I sometimes have superhuman confidence, I feel like I underestimated myself on this one. I was unwittingly holding myself back by not putting myself in positions where I had no choice but to succeed. So now I’m making a habit of it. I’m also challenging my friends in the same way.

And I’m challenging you too. Don’t sell yourself short. You know that five year goal of yours? The thing you want to do before you die? Try doing it by next month.
