Several months ago, at the encouragement of a good friend and fellow solopreneur, I read the UnCollege manifesto, written by Dale J. Stephens. If I could recommend only thing for you to read, it would be the UnCollege manifesto.
Today I re-read the manifesto, and I want to share this list from it.
12 Steps to Self-Directed Lifelong Learning
1. Always carry a book, pen, and paper
2. Teach others
3. Keep a to-learn list
4. Start something — a Web site, company, organization, movement
If you’re looking for an easy way to connect with solopreneurs and to stay current on solopreneur-related information, I suggest that you follow and use the “#solopreneurs” hashtag on Twitter.
I use Hootsuite for my Twitter client, and I have a stream to monitor #solopreneurs. I have also begun including #solopreneurs in pertinent tweets.
To cast a wider net, follow the use of the word “solopreneurs” (without the # sign). I think this is an excellent option, because it gives you a sense of how solopreneurism is being talked about by the general public.
“The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms.” — Socrates
What is the definition of success for you and for your life?
This might be the most important question to ask — and answer — as you enter into solopreneurship. Why is defining success so important? Because before you can set goals toward achieving success, you must define what success is.
Day after day, it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat, shows the fear
Ghosts appear and fade away. – From “Overkill,” by Colin Hay, originally performed by Men at Work
As a solopreneur, fear and doubt are our worst enemies. They break into our minds and rob us of momentum, energy, and vision. Left unchecked, fear and doubt can paralyze.
Optimism and confidence helped us build our businesses; fear and doubt can destroy them. Here are seven ways to combat fear and doubt.

This is a poem titled “The Guy in the Glass” (also known as “The Man in the Glass”), written by Dale Wimbrow in 1934. I read the poem during my radio show on Monday and received a positive response about its message. During the holiday, give yourself a contemplative moment and read “The Guy in the Glass.” Have a grateful Thanksgiving!
The Guy in the Glass
When you get what you want in your struggles for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.
October 22, 2010 Update: Yesterday social media and Facebook expert Tommy Walker (a Get Connected member) hosted a chat: “How to Advertise Successfully on Facebook.” I had several “Aha!” moments during the chat, and I know I wasn’t the only one; I feel like now I “get” how Facebook can work for B2B and for me. The conversation and learning has continued after the chat, with Tommy fielding questions in the Get Connected Forum. Join us!
