Go Your Own Way? Musings on Fleetwood Mac, Collaboration, and Solopreneurship

May 14th, 2013 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Collaboration and Partnership

As solo-business owners, we embrace the “solopreneur” lifestyle — we treasure the independence and flexibility that it gives us.

But being a solopreneur doesn’t mean you shouldn’t collaborate with others. Look at the music industry, for example.

Fleetwood Mac at their zenith in the 1970s: Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham

I’ve always thought of musicians as solopreneurs. They learn their crafts individually and often in isolation, but they come together to form groups of varying sizes and longevity.

I Need Web-Site Pros For My Virtual Corporation

September 20th, 2012 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Collaboration and Partnership

My flagship/main/original business is Straight River Media, which provides marketing communications for small businesses.

From “day one” of my business formation in December of 1993, Straight River Media has operated as a virtual corporation. This means that if a project requires a particular creative skill that’s outside of my expertise, I have trusted resources at the ready.

Right now, I’m looking for Web-site professionals to add to my virtual corporation. I need pros who build sites that are fast-loading, search-friendly, easy-to-update, and easy to manage. We should talk if you:

• Specialize in building simple, low-cost Web sites

How To Decide Whether You Will Enjoy Working With a Prospective Client

April 19th, 2011 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Client Relations, Collaboration and Partnership

These Are the Results of The Solopreneur Life’s
Crowdsourced Question #1

The Solopreneur Life Crowdsourced Question (the name just rolls of the tongue!) is a new, occasional feature for The Solopreneur Life. It’s kind of the like the “Person on the Street” feature that newspapers used to publish.

I’m hedging my bets and saying “occasional.” While I think crowdsourced articles are a great idea, I think their use is going to become very popular and possibly over-used, due to the advent of a tool called BlogStampede.com. We’ll see. Plus, I don’t want to detract from the superb Q&A that Dr. Shannon Reece does on a weekly basis. She was doing this pre-BlogStampede.com, and she does a superb job.

How the DISC Behavioral Model Can Help Solopreneurs

March 24th, 2011 by Larry Keltto | Posted in Client Relations, Coaching, Collaboration and Partnership

DISC is a behavioral model based on the work of Dr. William Moulton Marston (1893–1947) to examine the behavior of individuals in their environment or within a specific situation.

I was introduced to this system recently. I haven’t studied it in great depth yet, but I plan to because I think it gives us as solopreneurs a framework for understanding ourselves, our clients, and our collaborators.

DISC also can help us:

• Identify our weaknesses

• Identify growth areas

• Identify our fears

• Explain our motivations
